The Christmas period is often the hardest time of year to stay motivated. It makes it especially hard when you are surrounded by chocolate, sweets and cold weather! The dark, cold and wet days and nights are enough to put you off going on your weekly 30min jog but you need to remember why you are exercising and push yourself to carry on! The only thing that needs to change in the winter is your mindset. Of course, the time of year and your surroundings shout out unhealthy eating and lazy days but you shouldn’t let this take over. Fight that voice in your head telling you to stay in bed for an extra hour and get yourself up and get some fresh air!What can I do to keep motivated to work out?
One of the hardest things to do is find that mindset to stay motivated. The best ways to keep yourself motivated is to set yourself some targets of what you want to achieve over the next 3 months. If you’re working towards something, you are more likely to find that motivation to go out and exercise – if you have no specific reason to exercise, it’s easy to persuade yourself out of exercising.
What kind of targets of the best?
Find something that you want to do for yourself, not what you believe others think you should be doing. If you’re doing something for yourself, it makes it more fun and when you finally meet those targets, the sense of achievement will be a whole lot better. A few ideas of what you could aim for include:
- Train for an upcoming event: This can be seen as more of a short term goal that can easily be achieved over the winter period. Whether this is training for a 10k run or if you really want to challenge yourself, for the next marathon, set yourself week by week, month by month targets for you to achieve in order to prepare yourself for the event. Exercises such as running are often a lot nicer to do over winter as well as you don’t get super-hot and sweaty and the fresh air wakes you up and leaves you feeling refreshed.
- Set yourself goals: If you’re not really interested in training for an event then setting yourself simple goals can keep you motivated. Goals can be anything from increasing your running distance from 5K to 6K over 2 weeks or adding a few kilos’ to your weights. Don’t want it to focus just on fitness? No problem! You can even set goals such as losing weight. That way you stay motivated to eat well as well as keep exercising. Think of your ideal summer body now instead of 2 months before the summer!
- Just keep thinking of those benefits: Yes it may seem hard dragging yourself out of bed early in the morning or going to the gym on the way home from work but just keep in mind what your hard work is doing. Can’t be bothered waking up an hour early this morning? Think of your targets and goals. Really craving that whole selection box full of chocolate? Think of your targets and goals. Whatever you do, think of your targets and goals!
- Try a personal trainer: Personal trainers are one of the best ways to stay motivated. Not only are they experts in keeping up the motivation for their clients, they also understand the urges you need to resist over Christmas so often have the best advice. Not only this but by paying for a personal trainer, you don’t want to waste your own money nor do the personal trainer’s so this often gives you the motivation to carry on even when you don’t want to!
- Give yourself rewards: I feel this is one of the most important things to do to stay motivated. If you don’t reward yourself, how are you going to keep it fun? Set yourself goals every week, even if it’s just exercising at least 4 times throughout the week and when you achieve it, treat yourself! This doesn’t mean you can now eat that whole selection pack to yourself like I said before, you need to think of your targets and goals! However, it doesn’t mean you can’t go and buy yourself some new clothes or even indulge in one of those treats in your selection box.
