Reach for Your Goal

By: Louise Rigby

“Reach for the stars” is a S club 7 song we all know too well! But maybe there are some wise words in this song….

When starting a training programme it is important to set goals to keep you focused and motivated. Reaching a goal is truly something to celebrate and feel good about!

When thinking about goal setting I always like to follow the SMART principle:

Specific

Measurable

Achievable

Relevant

Time based

Your training goals should be specific to you and what you wish to achieve, measurable so you know when you have reached your target, achievable so you never feel disheartened, relevant to keep you on track and time based so you are not tempted to slack!!!

An example of a SMART goal I used while training for my first half marathon was

“To jog 10 kilometers in a 1 hour time frame within 1 month”

Once you have reached your goals it’s a great idea to make new and higher ones! You will find your training is more effective when you have regular targets to hit.
