You Can’t Buy Happiness but You Can Buy a Massage!

By: Louise Rigby

Everybody desires happiness. Happiness can be defined as a state of well-being involving positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy.

Unfortunately, sometimes your state of happiness is hindered and challenged. This can be due to many reasons and is individual to each person. When you encounter a stressful situation your body has an internal reaction involving the “fight or flight” response. The hypothalamus within the brain stimulates the release of the hormone cortisol into the bloodstream. Small amounts of cortisol can help you feel alerted, responsive and reactive during stressful or dangerous situations. However, prolonged periods of cortisol release can lead the individual to feel anxious, stressed and even depressed.   IMG_0970When you receive a massage from one of our therapists you will experience a number of physiological effects, one being the decreased release of cortisol. Furthermore, the body will be stimulated to increase the release of endorphins, serotonin and dopamine. Endorphins are our feel-good hormones and are released when the autonomic nervous system is stimulated. The release of serotonin can increase feelings of well-being, happiness and relaxation. The increased release of dopamine can increase feelings of self-worth and motivation. Overall the stimulated release of endorphins from the application of massage therapy can increase happiness and decrease negative feelings such as anxiety, stress and depression.IMG_9905If you suffer from stress due to work or social life commitments then book an appointment with one of our massage therapists and you could experience an immediate reduction in stress and increased release of endorphins. Our massage deals make it affordable to undertake regular massage sessions and control your levels of stress hormone, cortisol.
